Small Business of the Year Award recognizes a business’s management ability, continued growth, innovativeness of their product or service, and contribution to the community or others.

Economic Development Leader of the Year Award acknowledges management ability and contribution to the community and region by working toward continued growth and viability of the region, along with efforts made to build good, strong relationships with business.

Creative Arts Award acknowledges the ability to offer top-caliber talent to the community, the use of local talent representing the diversity of the communities it serves, demonstration of continued growth and success as an organization and its willingness to engage in collaborative efforts with other creative arts organizations.

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award recognizes the vision, innovation and hard work of a young person; their contribution to the community or others;  and raises awareness in our communities and among our youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America.

David Withrow
David L. Withrow is the Director of Taxable Fixed Income, responsible for the management of actively managed fixed income portfolios for ClearArc Capital. He joined ClearArc Capital in 2001 as a Senior Fixed Income Portfolio Manager and has 25 years of investment experience. Prior to that, David served in a similar capacity for Fifth Third Bank Investment Advisors. He is a member of the Cincinnati Society of Financial Analysts and a Board member for The Cooperative for Education in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Withrow graduated from Anderson University with a B.A. in Economics and is a CFA Charterholder.

Keynote Presentation: It”s Not Small Business, It”s Your Business

Tony Sindone

Tony Sindone is a Continuing Lecturer in Economics at Purdue University North Central. He holds a MA degree in economics from Notre Dame with concentrations in labor economics and public policy. He is in the process of completing his Ph. D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame. Prior to Purdue, he served on the faculties of Indiana University South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. His more than 27 years’ experience as well as his research and consulting interests include forensic economics, labor markets, workforce development, public policy, housing markets, and regional economic development. He is a member of the Regional Council of Economic Advisors for Northwest Indiana. His opinions on regional economic issues and labor markets are sought often by local news media in Northwest Indiana. He has been quoted numerous times in regional newspapers and has been a frequent guest on news radio.

Prior to pursuing his academic and consulting career, Mr. Sindone worked as an avionics technician, inspector and quality engineer for Lockheed Aircraft Service. He started and grew a technology service company while in graduate school. He was also the owner of a popular restaurant and home furnishings store in La Porte, Indiana.

Additionally, Mr. Sindone had served in the past as the President of the La Porte City Redevelopment Commission. He had also served on several not for profit Boards of Directors including as President of Stepping Stone Shelter for Women and as President of Smooth Jazz At South Shore Inc. In addition to his work with the Regional Council of Economic Advisors, he is currently serving on the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) 2040 Plan Implementation Committee. His focus on that committee is on workforce development and innovation.

About South Suburban College’s SCORE Mentor, Eric Hager

South Suburban College is pleased to have Eric Hager as our SCORE mentor. Eric owned a small sheet metal fabricating business that manufactured food service carts, concession equipment and display carts, primarily for the food service industry.

He also worked for the United States Census Bureau in various capacities, including Geographic Specialist, supporting municipal government’s efforts to receive proper federal funding through accurate population figures based on GIS analysis. He also provided consultative support, made presentations, and provided customer service to over 1200 government units.

Additionally, Eric worked for the Small Business Administration as a Disaster Loan Specialist, assisting individuals and businesses in filing the financial documentation required for Disaster Assistance and in Customer Relations as a liaison with the public.

Eric understands and can mentor small business owners, connects businesses with needed resources, helps businesses navigate necessary paperwork and processes, and helps them get organized and move the processes involved in opening and maintaining/expanding their business.

Keynote Speaker:  Jeffrey Korzenik
 
Jeff Korzenik is chief investment strategist for Fifth Third Bank, where he is responsible for the Bank’s overall client investment strategy.  A 27-year industry veteran, Korzenik’s background includes research and management roles at some of the country’s largest investment firms. He has held positions in London, Chicago, New York and Boston.
Korzenik’s writings on economics and public policy have been published in The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, Forbes and other periodicals. He has been quoted in major industry publications including Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek. He is a frequent guest on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” program, and has also appeared on Bloomberg, FOX and regional television and radio. Korzenik was invited to testify on Capitol Hill as an expert witness on the use of commodity indexes by pensions and other institutional investors.
Mr. Korzenik earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Certificate of Proficiency in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.
Mr. Korzenik has served on the boards of several charitable organizations that support educational, environmental and cultural quality of life. His involvements have included: President’s Leadership Council of the Field Museum, Board of Overseers and Chairman of the Corporate Committee of the Peabody Essex Museum; trustee of Essex National Heritage Commission; board member of Symphony by the Sea; advisory board member of Salem Theatre Company; and board member of Salem State University Foundation.
