Did you see the movie   “Catch Me If You Can?”

Frank Abagnale

Frank Abagnale, Fraud Prevention Expert and our Keynote Speaker, was the subject of the movie.

The reformed conman that the 2002 film ‘Catch Me If You Can’ is based on has said that anyone living in the US has already had their identity stolen.

Frank Abagnale was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison in 1971 after 12 countries attempted to seek his extradition from France on fraud charges. Since his release he has worked as a security consultant, both for the FBI and private companies.

“We live in a too-much-information world,” Abagnale said. “You should know, wherever you live that your identity has already been stolen.”

Much of this is down to carelessness, rather than highly sophisticated hacks, with Abagnale reporting that in his consultancy work “he will drop memory sticks marked with ‘Confidential’ on the floor of the office. They are inevitably picked up by an employee and inserted into a work computer – releasing the bug he has placed on it into the system.”

“You fight technology with technology so you have to stay one step ahead of the criminal. It’s very much a chess game — they make a move, you have to make a move,” Abignale said. “Every breach you look at occurred because somebody inside did something they weren’t supposed to do. Sometimes there’s an accomplice but most of the time it’s innocent.

Fraud is one of the most important issues facing businesses and individuals today due to new payment systems that are sometimes unregulated and global fraudulent opportunities within businesses from all over the world.

Each of us is aware of recent examples of a hospital’s curtailed services resulting from a hacked and ransomed server, a senior citizen’s life savings lost through identity theft, or a business being fined millions of dollars for compromised customer credit card information.  Each breach costs resources in the form of time, money, incredible stress, lost business, and good will.  And, for each breach that made the news, many more have not … yet.

As a representative of a municipality, bank, corporate entity, or a medical or educational institution, you owe it to yourself, your clients, your employees and your suppliers to provide a safe exchange of goods and services.  By heightening awareness of this scary reality, businesses and residents of the southland can then mitigate risks.

Easier said than done…

Currently, an FBI consultant,  Abagnale, will share his compelling story of working the issues from both sides of the law and will offer real world, practical solutions.  Most importantly, he will drive us to the next steps of taking action in our personal, business and regional affairs.

Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun’s Keynote Address

The South Suburban Small Business Association (SSSBA) was honored to have Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun as keynote speaker for our 18th annual meeting and luncheon. The event was held at the Odyssey Country Club on September 30th, 2015.

Braun was well received by a large group of SSSBA members and guests. As the owner of her own small business, Good Food Organics, a distributor of organic coffee, tea and olive oil, she was proud to boast that she had never missed a payroll.

She spoke to the group about “Capitalism and Conscience.” In her address, she gave several examples of how businesses have sought to turn a profit without much regard to how their products or services ultimately affected mankind or the environment. She pointed out that capitalism and conscience have historically been on opposite ends of the spectrum in business as well as in government. And she reminded us all that as business leaders and government officials, we should always be mindful about how our actions affect others either directly or indirectly.

And in parting, Ambassador Braun left us with this poem (writer unknown):

One song can spark a moment

One flower can wake a dream

One tree can start a forest

One bird can herald spring

One smile begins a friendship

One handclasp lifts a soul

One star can guide a ship

One thought can frame a goal

One vote can change a nation

One sunbeam lights a room

One candle wipes out darkness

One laugh will conquer gloom

One step must start each journey

One word must start each prayer

One hope will raise our spirits

One touch can show you care

One voice can speak with wisdom

One heart can know what’s true

One life can make a difference

One person just like you.
